It's been a hectic and tiring week, and I just haven't felt like looking at a computer screen when I've finally gotten home and settled, ergo the recent lack of updates. Hopefully, I'll be posting more this week. In the meantime, check out my Amazon Wish List and buy me some cool shit. You know you wanna.
Its Breast Cancer Awareness Month. How many people do you know that have been touched by the disease?
Submitted by Karen.
My mother had breast cancer throughout my junior high school years. At the time I really didn't realize the severity of it, partly because she was incredibly strong, and partly because of my own naivety and ignorance. After a double mastectomy and radiation therapy she's been cancer free for 10 years now, but it has forever effected her endurance and her ability to do the kind of work she used to do. Even if the cancer never comes back she will forever feel the effects of it.
Caution: Uninhibited rant lies ahead.
Could somebody please explain to me what the deal is with everyone throwing around the term emo when they don't even know what the bloody fuck it means? I've heard everyone from Green Day to Bright Eyes to Elvis fucking Costello classified as emo (as an insult) by people who's musical spectrum ranges all the way from Creed to Nickelback to whatever the fuck they're playing at the Abercrombie and Fitch this week. Never mind that none of these bands are even the slightest bit emo. It's like it's just become the cool insult to hurl at whatever you don't like or understand. Like in junior high when everything was "gay". Then you have the jock and metal meatheads who seem to think that anything they can't beat their chests to is emo.
"Dude. What's this emo shit you're listening to? Billy Joel? Gay."
Or the asshats who think it applies to anything with emotional lyrics. Cause, ya know. B.B. King is SO emo. I bet old Riley cuts himself after every show, and I don't mean to check his blood sugar. Never mind that cutting has nothing to do with emo either.
And the thing is, I could let all this slide if it weren't people over the age of 18 doing this shit. Under 18 you're supposed to be stupid. You're young. It's your job. But I'm hearing this shit from fucking grown ups with families and children. And their children are going to grow up to be dumb as dick too, because that's what happens when stupid people breed. And they will grow up and elect one of their own as leader of the free world. Oh wait.
End rant.
What's the best music documentary or concert film you've seen?
I don't know that I would consider The U.S. vs John Lennon a music documentary, and it's definitely not a concert film. Instead, it is an historical documentary about the Nixon Administration's attempts to silence Lennon's anti-war message throughout the Vietnam War. Great film.
While away at school a few years ago I became interested in image manipulation and graphic design through the use of Photoshop CS. It was nothing more than a hobby at the time, but I soon found that I had a knack for working with images. Soon after graduating I decided that I wanted to go back to school for a formal graphic design education. I plan to start classes in 2008. Most of the work I did was in the form of message board signatures and banners for myself and some of my friends in the gaming community, and I was briefly a designer at the now defunct ClanGraphics.com. Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Katrina wrecking my good computer, I have been unable to pursue my hobby any further for the past couple of years. Here are a few of my favorite signatures I created for myself as well as a few friends.
I think this just jumped to the top of my Christmas list. Sure beats the lump of coal I got last year.
That said, I've never really taken an active interest in learning about these animals outside of the occasional National Geographic documentary until recently. Having learned more about them, I am now even more enthusiastic about the animals and appreciative of those who make it their life's mission to protect them from those who would do them harm.
But for all of the interesting things I've learned, I have also learned some troubling facts as well, not about the animals, but about the people who have made these animals their business and use the animals as a means to their own monetary ends. I'm not talking about animal cruelty in the capacity of unclean living conditions or inhumane or abusive treatment, though these things certainly happen and are most incredibly appalling. I'm speaking of the business of white tigers.
Notice, I said business of white tigers, not species, because as most people are unaware, there is no such species found in nature. There is, in fact, a dormant white gene found in nature. However, this gene is a double-recessive allele, meaning that for the white characteristic to become prominent, repeated and continuous inbreeding must occur. As this does not happen in nature, the only way to produce one of the majestic white tigers you may see at a Siegfried and Roy show is through forced continual inbreeding in captivity. Sadly, this causes a vast array of defects including cleft palette, still birth, mental retardation, scoliosis, and immune deficiency. All white tigers are cross-eyed, as the gene that causes the absence of the orange pigment also causes each optic nerve to be connected to the wrong side of the brain. This makes them perfect for magicians and circus animal tamers, because their genetic deficiencies make them more dependent upon their trainers.
In actuality, the majestic, fearsome looking white tigers of Las Vegas and Ringling Bros. fame represent a very small percentage of white tigers born in zoos and animal breeding facilities worldwide. More than 80% of white tigers die during or shortly after birth due to their weakened immune systems. The majority of the survivors look nothing like the tigers you may have seen proudly displayed at your local zoo. Instead, they look something like this:
Improv Everywhere has recently posted their latest prank: Sending 111 shirtless men into an Abercrombie and Fitch to buy shirts. I think the video speaks for itself.
